This painting was inspired by images left behind by the ancestral indigenous culture of La Aguada of the Argentine Northwest. The central figure is of a warrior in ceremonial dress poised for battle with the armies of the Inca Empire, which in 1463 initiated their descent from Peru to eventually conquer the area. Over one century later, the Spanish royalist armies waged their own war of conquest against the indigenous people.
